I got excited browsing news today with a headline concerning the London Underground considering extending tube hours. Read on to find that they are only considering extending the last tube from midnight to 1am on weekend evenings and even then the tubes will start an hour later weekend mornings. Reminded me of a conversation I had with Justin Bond at Duckie a while back about how London is perhaps the most inconvenient major city. Maybe I'm just spoiled having lived in New York. It's so frustrating to realize that in New York I'd hardly ever show up at a bar or club before midnight yet in London by that time I'm already on the last tube home. Makes me miss New York. I guess I should count myself lucky though that licencing laws are being relaxed to allow 24hr drinking.
I'm certainly not missing the much harsher New York winters. Amusingly it snowed in London today for about two minutes and as per usual everybody hauled up indoors and acted like it was the apocalypse. If the British Isle was used to plug up Lake Eerie the British people would never survive.

What do u mean the cabs... u mean EVERYTHING for Americans right now is crazy expensive... if u go in Macy's right now ALL the people shopping are from the UK everything for them is like half price right now.... I have pals coming over with empty suitcases!
If you think a cab is expensive in London don't try riding in a cab in Tokyo. Ouch.
I've always thought that is why clubs in London stay open until the sun comes up. Since the trains stop around midnight or one AM no one can get home from partying until the next morning. By the time you leave the party the trains are on again.
Has anyone seen Acorn Antiques The Musical ?? Am DYING to see it....!!! For anyone not in the know... Acorn Antiques was comedian Victoria Wood's spoof TV soap opera that was part of her 1980 TV comedy show... With wobbly sets, missed cues, forgotten lines and stares into the camera... it was BRILLIANT and is now been brought to the London stage with original tv cast! Julie Walters was amazing as the elderly hunched back Mrs Overall with the wrinkly pantyhose and the wobbly tea tray....am DYING to see this on stage...especially with Walters and Celia Imrie! Anyone tell me what its like.. might have to hop over there to see it if its great!+
If you are in to art try the Serpentine Gallery and the Tate Modern. Both usually have excellent exhibits up. For clubs it might be good to try to get Lavinia Co-op's attention on the boards here for some advice, but I haven't seen her posts lately. Anna Nicole should know some of the current hot spots also. You can always pick up a Time Out when you hit the city but be warned, it is about three or four times the page count as the NYC version -which tells you how much more is going on in London. For a real native treat I like to go to the dog races at Walthamstow. Its a bit of a ride outside the town but completely worth it. Totally wild scene, it all ends with the entire place literally carpeted by empty beer cups, no joke, the stands and passageways totally covered with the empties of thousands of blasted betters. It isn't too hard to pick up a good angle on betting either, just use the rating system in the race program, last time I was there I came away with close to a hundred quid. And I'm sure you know that's what you have to watch out for now -the US dollar ain't worth a dime over there at present.
I'm sure you will have a super time.

I think the Tate Modern might just be our first stop, because everyone's been raving, And the dog race lead is classic, we'll have to seriously consider it. (May help fund the Paris leg)
We've got a bit of a head start on club nights. We're VERY excited thatFixmer/McCarthy (Douglas McCarthy vocals from Nitzer Ebb with Terence Fixmer techno god) are playing at NAG NAG NAG on June 1st. All other nights out will be icing on that!
My folks used to take me to Walthamstow dogs when I was kid so it's a little weird to think of people travelling so far to visit it. It really is a spectacle though - it's kind of the Buckingham Palace of dog racing. I spent many summers of my youth touring in my parent's caravan visiting much less legit dog tracks. I remember one where a riot near broke out coz they could not get the hare running fast enough which meant it was caught by the dogs. In my mind at the time I thought the dog that caught it first should win as that was the point of the race. In reality it means all bets are off, hence the near riot.
If I were you I'd defo do the Tate Modern - even if the art is irrelevant the space is just awesome. For a day trip I'd hop on a train and go to Brighton as it is sucking everybody and everything cool out of London so let it suck you. Whilst there resist the urge to paddle as this many people living on such a small island never leads to a pleasent sea dip. Personally I'm just waiting a few more years til the English Channel turns into solid excrement and then I'll be selling welly boots and nose plugs on the beach encouraging people to walk to France. I'll put Eurostar out of business in no time.
I have not been to Nag yet but keep meaning to as I always hear rave reviews. It's a shame you are leaving on the June 4th as I'm performing at Duckie that night.
Anyways, have a safe trip and enjoy run of the manor.
All I want is tubes that run 24hours. I just heard today that unders 16s from August will travel London buses for free and this will be extended to students under 18. This will cost 50 million pounds most likely provided by fare hikes to over 18 London transport users. If not a 24hour tube then how about instead of a mobile sauna a better ventialted tube. The Underground Manging Director in response to this said that tube users should practice better personal hygeine, shower in the morning and a tube journey would be more pleasent. Oh well, hopefully London's Victorian transport ideology will keep the Olympics away.
O.K. --> Why does it take twice as long as you were gone to get caught back up from a vacation??? -----
We're planning a "top ten" list of the most memorable days/nights/experiences in London and Paris... BUT, I just can't wait to share this one.
#1 Most amazing night out of our trip. ------> And WELL within our top 5 nights out EVER was on Thursday, June 2nd, 2005.
First we went to see Gene Loves Jezebel at the infamous 100 Club with about 40-50 other people. This is now in our top 2 live shows of all time.
Michael Aston's vocals were, as always amazing, sultry and sexy. Even though he self reported he was at 80% (yeah, right) And the new band ROCKED OUT. That, we expected. What we DIDN'T expect was that Michael is also a brilliant comic. He interacted with his fans in such a way that we were ALL part of the show. Some were MUCH MORE a part, because when he saw that several of the women in the audience knew all the words, he invited them up on stage to sing backup!
Thoughout the show, Michael also wove in and out lyrics and melodies from such various artists as The Doors and Joy Division. We stayed afterwards to buy/get autographed their new album "Exploding Girl" a return to their rich, mysterious roots.
If the night had ended there, we couldn't have been happier... BUT...
We had gotten a flier earlier in the week for "Electrogogo"@ Madame Jojo's with Resident DJ.... none other than Mark Moore - from S-Express fame. Guest DJ for that night was Rex The Dog (who we'd only heard of from his remix of Depeche Mode's Photographic) We weren't quite sure what to expect from a dog DJ, I mean, all the dogs we know have a short attention span, and tend to chase small furry things...
WELL.. THIS SET CHANGED OUR LIVES.
O.K. first off, he started out with Mel and Kim's "Showing Out." (fucking classic) and moved into a mean mix of NRG/Acid House/Melodic Industial/Current Electro and then the truely orgazmic moment came (aaaghem) when he mixed in "Theme from S-Express" with Mark Moore standing right there! (can you say ballsy?)To close the set he AGAIN summoned up Mel and Kim to end it all with "Respectable." Are you reading our minds??
We're hooked. We may just follow this little guy around. We showed our appreciation by throwing a couple buscuits as the flier suggested, but he was so cute, we were intimidated to try the tummy tickles.
Check out the Minimix on his site HERE to get a 5 minute version. It doesn't really do the set justice, but you'll get the idea.
Anyhow, more stories (and pictures) to come. Just HAD to share this!
Ran into her at Antony's concert and forgot to get the information about her cabaret show in London. I will be there the week of Thanksgiving and need to know the name of the club, address, etc. Maybe Nancy Isla can get away from the garden long enough to post ... I don't have Sammy Jo's email. Thanks, Lex
Well Lex I love you dearly, but for a stalker you need to keep a little more quiet about your plans to go get a bit of Prince Harry. Announcing your trip on these boards is definitely going to put you on Scotland Yard's scope and your chances of plying the Royal Baldwins is nil!
As for your secondary interest in London, Ms. Bond, according to listings she's at Too2Much near the Piccadilly Circus tube, on select nights only through November 31. Just do a google search for 'Justin Bond London' and you will get a couple sites where you can buy advance tickets. Its a pretty nice club frequentedy by The Lady Bunny, Trannyshack, and other NYC imports. I hope you get in A LOT of trouble.

Well Seven you guessed my true motives! Looking forward to rimming Harry for hours and hours!
Thanks for the info on JB ... I will investigate. I'm going with my mother actually so I'll be on "better" behavior than normal, she is curious to see what manner of freak I've been running with all these years ... however the likelihood of me wearing Mom out with tons of daily sightseeing is high ... better for sneaking out at night while she sleeps it off at the hotel!

So here I am hanging out in Ole London Towne with my mom. Last night we downed some beer at a pub and saw the stage production of Billy Elliot which was incredible. A real tearjerker, just like the multitude of homely long-toothed blokes I pass near Victoria Station. (spotting a few gems in the masses, though)
And conveniently the drinking laws have changed as of today! Now bars don't have to close at 11 p.m. .... they can stay open later. Already plotting which night I can steal away for a twink viewing at G.A.Y. .... more later.
