so glad to find a cafe where i can use my own computer and the airport i otherwise so rarely use. Kyoto, ancient city of wonder, is the very best of Japan...elagant, mellow, deep, sophistcated. Very looking forward to going to the big kyoto drag happening "diamonds are forever" at the old METRO club tonight (entrance is in the subway station). Also great performances in the Leigh Bowery way at Performance Space 1928 by the group Kyupi Kyupi. Great late night eating there too. Also and especially at the Yoshida-ya restaurant (very hard to find) at the southeast tip of the emperial palace. Both places have late night cheap and great food...but especially warm atmosphere with beautiful hip people...not like anything I,ve seen elswhere in japan...especially not in tokyo.
The tiny club Metro was nice and going on almost 15 years it benfits from some of the patina of age found on so much of this city. A very old school drag show as we'd say...those queens have the tiniest waists..and no corsets! Totally endearing the way lypsyncing lipsticked lips and tongue wrap themselves around a very distinct letter 'L' in words like 'turn' and 'around'.
Also the Calcium House has fully naked fan dance show with black light and dry ice
many bars/restaurants boast 'a favorite haunt of David Bowie' back in the day..of course
By the way...Kyoto is the only city in Japan where, if you are lucky, at night you can spot real live geisha floating down tiny dim streets from one appointment to the next
late night full moon mountain temple ceremonies coming up
Hi Basil, Thanks for giving us the Japanese 411. I always liked Japan outside of Tokyo more too. Tokyo is great but I'm always afraid some big monster is going to come and start messing things up. Then I'll have to go running out in the street and scream and... well, you know what mean.
Seven, it's "Ohayo Gozaimasu". 京都芸術センター Thanx Basil for Kyoto411. I'll take a note of it for my next trip Live Geisha can be seen in other cities as well, but it won't be as beautiful as we see them in the ancient city. It was such a Blade Runner experience to share an elevator with live Geisha in the center of Tokyo though... Enjoy GOLDEN WEEK

??Daddy, what is big monster?? There're so many monsters of different sizes in Japan, but which one?
New York is not that safe either! This thing caught me one night at Cheez Whiz. (Jamie Casertano got it on film) I just got away by the skin of my teeth! That was a close one. I think she's still out there.
