I can't believe this... I was just going to post about new girl on the block, Epiphany and what do I see? Miss Understood has (of course) beat me to it.
I guess I've "been seein' her" around but it was her show at Sweetie's birthday that knocked me out. Damn! That bitch can sing! Very easy on the eyes as well.
Justin (Bond) and I were talking about her last night (as the cleaning crew threw us out of The Phoenix at about 8AM). Thank God kids are still moving to New York.
Now, is she the daughter of Bianca Leigh? It would make sense.
Snatch her up Miss Understood! I know Sweetie already has.

darlings, please tell me, what does it take to live and work as a drag entertaner in modern day NYC? you know i am asking becasue i do aspire to rule NYC as its soveriegn and undisputed queen of night life. i need what we call down here in the south a "drag mama" to show me the ropes and teach me all she knows about her craft...
Unlike other cities which have very specific drag scenes, New York is very fragmented. There's not one main place to perform or be seen. You'll find queens who've been steadily performing for 10 years who don't know eachother. There's some who work the Latin scene, some who do the gay bars, some who work with mixed crowds in large clubs, etc. Most drag queens have a job or career apart from drag performing. The top "day" jobs in my experience would be hairdressing for the drag queens and escorting for the trannies. It's so varried though that I really can't generalize.
Those who do manage to do drag for a living have generally carved out an little niche for themselves: Promoting events, DJing, traveling with a cabaret act, etc. It can take a long time to achieve that.
As for making a name for yourself, you really need to make sure that there is something distinct about you. I've seen many small town drag stars who move to Manhattan become disappointed by the lack of attention they receive compared to the homage they were paid back home.

Queenjosh - I love that you "aspire to rule NYC as its sovereign and undisputed queen of nightlife"...
I remember when Kevin Aviance came to New York - sometime during the summer of '94. He had only lived here a couple of months and was finding his way around. We went on a little date together - somewhere in the West Village. I remember asking him what he wanted to do here. He looked me square in the eye and said exactly what you just said "I want to rule everything" - or something fierce. I remember saying: "Then Im sure you will...".
And while I came to New York from San Francisco many moons ago - hoping to put the living doll to bed - indeed looking to find a new role for myself - Im happy to share what comes to mind regarding being absolutely, resolutely fabulous:
Be yourself. Do what you want to do. You are young, beautiful, creative - people will flock to you like moths to a flame! Remember, the moment you feel any pressure to 'do' anything - you probably need to treat yourself to a course correction!
Be gracious. If you're the kind of person who sees something beautiful and wonderful about everyone you meet - tell them! they love to hear it. no one likes a bitter queen. young, gorgeous and bitter = wildly unappealing.
Neither alchohol nor drugs will, by default, make you more interesting. while there are some glamourpusses with herculean constitutions (re: Mother Flawless!) - many of the lifers in the scene - some of the most fabulous - are people who have had to give it up entirely.
Go forth with abandon, young beauty!
blessed beast, jade

Still does, Daddy! My sister dating one of them! And two others as well in the first couple years of her high school career. As for me well thats another thing all together! Wink wink nudge nudge say no more say no more!
