Kevin Hope you're physically well soon and the STAR of the parade. As one human bean to another, I am so sorry for the horrid act and apologize for the parents. grandparents and everyone else in this country, who taught those young men HATRED. I sent the following to everyone on my EM list. My Love To You Namaste' Wally Barrett--59 year old white, sraight male.
What's wrong with us? "NO ONE stopped to help," in NYC...Congrats Amerika
Let's see........who'll be quietly "ok" about this......cheney, bush, kissinger, the other ccc, kkk and Homophobe members in DC (our leaders!!!) and all over the south (north too), the pope and his folks, all the other righteous "religious" folk and the right wingers throughout Amerika...........Hell, most of Amerika is "OK" with this.
Congrats to us all.....2 of "them" in one shot. If he were "an illegal," we could get 3..............
How many of you are sayin, "It isn't me, I didn't do it, I don't believe it's right" or are ready to knit-pick about something I offended.
If we ALL didn't allow it, it could NOT happen.
We're proud of and bask in the great accomplishments of those who came before us, but won't take any responsibility for the wrongs done by our predecessors.
In the last 7 1/2 yrs. James Byrd was lynched in a southern state (Texas) because of the color of his skin and Matthew Shepard was lynched in Wyoming (ought to be a southern state) because he was born gay. Haven't heard people from either state or anywhere else say they were embarrassed. No groups fighting to change things, like take down those klan statues and klan flag (There wasn't one flag of that short lived {JUST 4 yrs.} Confederate States of America, it was one of many battle flags) throughout the south and in places like Colorado Springs, Colorado, (klan, ccc, far right wing, stronghold of MY part of this country). I AM embarrassed to say that about MY or any state.
How about putting an end to that fascist, homophobe set of laws to change our wondrous Constituion.

We're in the 21st Century and that bizarre, real short, UNcivil war ended 151 years ago
The Constitution was written ONLY 219 short years ago and is very clear....."ALL Men (means human beings, doesn't it???) Are Created Equal" No ambiguities, it's an absolute.
Folks.......Racism/Prejudice is killing our country...........
kevin, as a straight women, the facilitator of the LGBTS Alliance at the Renaissance Charter School, and a resident of the East Village, I would like to say that I am completely outraged and disgusted by what happened to you. Even more disgusting is the apathy in a supposed "gay friendly" community. I wish I was there, I would have defended you and obtained help. Please get well soon. ALI
Kevin - best wishes to you!!!! We met at Cherry a few years ago. Loved dancing with you and Moody. Can't wait til you are back!!! The little brown girl from NC
Needless to say, I am quite saddened at hearing this news this weekend. My thoughts are with you Kevin while you are recovering.....and you will recover in every single way. I want to see you come back better than ever!!
This morning I was listening to my ipod on the bus on shuffle......And a song came on and Instantly thought about you as I was listening to the lyrics. Here's the chorus:
What you needs a little change of heart Forget this fear and frustration Love will always play the greater part When your battles wear you down Heres my advice -
When youre feeling down and out And youve got troubles on you mind Love will save the day When youre feeling full of doubt And fear has got you in a bind Love will save the day When your worlds falling apart All you have to do is say a prayer And love will save the day Theres an answer in your heart So let your light shine on my dear And love will save the day Love will save the day!
(Whitney Houston - Love Will Save The Day)
Hope to see you soon Kevin!

"Whenever you see darkness, there is extraordinary opportunity for the light to burn brighter."~~Bono~~
I just wanted to send you some love and hope you get better real soon. I am so sorry that anyone would be so cruel and hateful. I can't believe there are still people out there that would act this way towards another human being. It is sick and appalling. All I can say is Karma will take care of this people and the ones that stood by and did nothing, one day they will be in need of help and someone will just walk on by them too. Your strength and beauty will come out even stronger then before. All the best wishes from your canadian fans.
I think it's disgusting that Kevin's attackers have learned hate at such young ages. I hope they will all receive long, hard jail terms for their vicious, depraved attack on Kevin. I hope and pray for Kevin's swift and full recovery, and I hope he will still attend Pride in two weeks. I hope he is not discouraged in any way from continuing to entertain and uplift us all.

A Manhattan singer was taunted and beaten early yesterday by a group of young men who shouted anti-gay slurs and then broke his jaw as he walked in the East Village, the police and the singer's publicist said. During the attack, the singer said, no bystanders came to his aid.
The singer, Kevin Aviance, 38, who has recorded a number of popular dance songs, underwent surgery for a broken jaw at Beth Israel Medical Center last night, said his publicist, Len Evans, who said he talked with Mr. Aviance after the beating.
Two 20-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy were arrested in connection with the beating last night. The men, Akino George of Townsend Avenue in the Bronx and Sears Jarell of Newark, and the 16-year-old, who lives within blocks of where the police said the attack took place, were charged with first degree assault as a hate crime, the police said.
According to Mr. Aviance, Mr. Evans said, he was heading to his Chelsea home about 1 a.m. yesterday after leaving Phoenix, a bar on East 13th Street, where he had been relaxing with friends. As he walked on East 14th Street near First Avenue, Mr. Evans said, Mr. Aviance was approached by six or seven young men who shouted anti-gay slurs and threw objects at him, including a spray can that one of them had fished out of a trash bin.
One of the young men punched Mr. Aviance, and the others attacked him.
"They dragged him to the curb," said Mr. Evans, adding that Mr. Aviance said that the men threatened to kill him. "There were pedestrians everywhere. No one helped him."
The young men stole Mr. Aviance's cellphone, Mr. Evans said. After the singer passed out, some bystanders apparently came to help him, Mr. Evans said.
Mr. Aviance performs in drag but was "dressed like a boy," before the attack, according to Mr. Evans. "They kept using these words. They said, 'You're not diesel.' He didn't know what that meant."
Mr. Evans said that the singer had planned to take part in next week's annual Gay Pride parade and festivities. "He won't be able to perform now that his jaw is wired shut," Mr. Evans said.
"Din Da Da," Mr. Aviance's infectious remake of a 1980's song, reached the top of the Billboard dance chart in August 1997, and another song, "Alive," was No. 1 on the chart in 2002.
Writing is merely an extension of the voices in my head.

Kevin, get better, love, and bring your ass to Texas as soon as you do! You know we are VERY country down here and we will welcome you with open arms! Love ya!
Even though I am not that familiar with your music, I just want you to know that as one human to another, you are in my prayers for a speedy recovery. From what I've read in your bio, I'm sure that the love from your family, friends and fans will help you through this. May the Lord keep watch over you.

I'm just a regular woman with grown daughters in upstate New York who read about the attack on Kevin. I'm just writing to say that there are so many more people who are supportive of his life than not that he needs to keep the good people in mind.
Take lots of Vitamin C to help with your recovery.

I just read about what happend to Kevin Aviance, I do not know her, but that did not stop me from looking up who I found to be a true DIVA. As I read, I was speaking aloud, and a co-worker responded by saying,"OOOO, that's kinda funny, it pissed me off so damn bad, I literally went off him. I mean what type of person thinks that kind of IGNORANCE is funny. Even though we all are aware of the closed minded, idiots that contaminate this world, NOTHING is funny about what happend to Diva Aviance. My prayers go out to you, and you will get through this with the love and strength from your support team, and from all of us who have just found and bonded with a new friend.
Terrible! What stupid, little, brainless hoodlums do this kind of thing, and in NYC no less? It's shocking. Kevin, I knew you back in DC in the early 90s and haven't forgotten your smiling face. Keep strong and heal quickly. You'll be back and better than ever, Miss Thing! xoxo, Anne Bidwell

I am from New Orleans, and read the article about his assault. I just wanted to say that I am appalled by the closed minded people that walk the streets and feel they have the right to attack someone for the sexuality. I sincerely hope that he prosecutes these animals to the fullest extent of the law. It must not lie still, and have him attacked and injured in vain. I believe in live and let live. Please send my hopes and prayers to him for a speedy recovery and DO NOT waiver in his beliefs and life style in fear that other imbeciles will do this again. I am sure with the coverage this gotten that it will be in everyone's minds. Please tell him to be STRONG and STAND BY HIS BELIEFS. I am Catholic and this week will dedicate a mass in his name.
Sincerely, Shelly Dugas Jefferson, La
