Long Arm of the Law

New York Sun Editorial
March 26, 2007

The more New Yorkers hear about the lengths the police department went to in order to protect the city during the Republican National Convention, the more appreciative they are going to be. The convention took place not only when enemy agents were searching for opportunities to attack symbols of our democracy but in the wake of violent demonstrations in Seattle, Quebec, and Genoa. A picture of how the New York Police Department moved to prevent a recurrence of that kind of violence here is emerging in a lawsuit on behalf of lawyers for persons arrested during the course of the protests.

Greedy
Gullible
Stupid
Mean

"Clueless" can fall under "gullible", slightly overlapping "stupid". "Corrupt" falls under "greedy" with a touch of "mean". "Religious" is usually some combination of the four, the percentages can vary. Religious leaders lean more towards "greed" and "mean" while the followers are more "gullible", and "mean" with a dash of "stupid".

Nah. A capitalist-socialist hybrid would be a much more accurate description, and not so closeted. For me it's about shades of gray, not absolute blacks and whites. I think there are some great things about our current system. I just believe there should be more safety nets is all. Yes, I love my Gucci, 4-star hotel stays, European vacations, etc but I also love preserving Social Security and look forward to the day when every person in this oh-so-wealthy country of ours has affordable health care -- even if they aren't Type-A personalities, aspiring Donald Trumps or members of the ruling class.

Lex,

No one wants to abolish SS. But it was/is a Ponzi scheme built out of a very desperate time (made worse by protectionism) that was never deigned to be eternal. FDR experimented with many programs most of which are gone today. If he were alive today I bet dollars to doughnuts he would be ripping the guts out of SS and transferring your retirement dollars, well, not much of anywhere at all. They would just pass through the economic engine and come back that much stronger for EVERYBODY. Even the artists. OK?

can i pop in here for a few comments ?

I'm NOT betting on Social Security to make my retirement yrs. better because there are just TOO MANY babyboomers to feed and take care of.

i have never had more then a few hundred $$$$ to my name, no bank accounts, credit cards or property to call my own. never moved back HOME after leaving at 17 & strongly doubt that i'll be living in a condo in florida ect.

My retirement plan is simple, live my life like there's NO tomorrow and when my last paycheck runs out and i'm back on the streets "homeless" Become a "crazy person" and go directly to the nearest NUTHOUSE to spend my retirement Medicated & playing silly games. It's really not as bad as it sounds because i've alway felt comfortable with FREAKS. The nut houses have the best variety of free drugs and i consider myself a pretty good actor. Hope to see yo all there so we can put on some great SHOWS and laugh our asses off.

btw, i've lived in China nopw for 9 yrs. and it's NOTHING like what i was told or heard about in the media. What a beautiful society & culture.

Dana, how does it differ from what is heard about in the media? I'm curious to know. Mostly you hear about the rabid capitalization and urban development. The biggest problems talked about are world class pollution, growing HIV crisis, and the inequality of women in society. What is the society really like?

Hon, if you believe that then I have a Manhattan bridge to sell you. The Bush administration most certainly did want to abolish SS. They just didn't want to say it because it would've caused too much uproar. Their voluntary privitazation proposal was merely a thinly-veiled pretext for incrementally dismantling the entire system for the purpose of abolishing taxes, the Almighty Commandment by which every right-winger lives. Taxes may not be fun but they are the price of a civilized society and pay for our roads, police and fire departments, libraries, and public learning institutions that taught billions of people to read and write or even play a musical instrument. (spare me the tedious arguments about the competitive advantages of privitizing everything ... institutions would end up only serving the biggest payers, and what FDR would or would not do were he alive today is not the point) Bleeding the system dry so that CEOs and Nancy's Reagan's bridge partners can save a few bucks is not only wrong, it's unnecessary. This country can afford it.

The problem with dumping everything through the economic engine is that corporations have no soul and tend to trample individual rights when left to their own devices. While I do believe competition is healthy, presents many fantastic opportunities and reflects fundamental human needs for hierarchies, tying everything to a business case or a profit margin erodes a society of meaning and humanity. It's a line we shouldn't cross.

Save your breath Lex. It's like talking to a wall. The republican party cares naught for anyone except themselves. They are devoid of anything fair and right for all.

Bill Moyers' scathing expose of media complicity in the marketing of the Iraq war premieres soon. It's about time.

Bill Moyers Probe of Press and Iraq

quote:
The war continues today, now in its fifth year, with the death toll for Americans and Iraqis rising again -- yet Moyers points out, "the press has yet to come to terms with its role in enabling the Bush Administration to go to war on false pretenses."

Take this quote from the article Lex:

"Of the 414 Iraq stories broadcast on NBC, ABC and CBS nightly news in the six months before the war, almost all could be traced back to sources solely in the White House, Pentagon or State Dept., Moyers tells Russert, who offers no coherent reply."

When all news becomes straight undiluted PROPAGANDA.

The 'news' people were no longer doing news. They were rubber stamping press releases from the military/idio(t)cratic complex.
