I can't for the life of me figure out why I haven't joined this board before. I guess between the last night of Mother and the beginning of motherboards my life took a left turn.

My name is Alexia, and I'm a singer/emcee struggling to figure out what I should be doing, much like everyone else. I moved to NYC in 1997. The cover of Time Out that week was Club Crisis! with a go-go girl (can't remember her name!) dressed for Click + Drag on the cover. After two trips to The Bank, I met Roman Holiday, who exhorted me to come to Click + Drag. I fell immediately in love.

Although I'd visit Clit Club, Contempt, Long Black Veil, and Jackie 60 (rarely - it conflicted with my regular karaoke night), Click + Drag really excited me, and I worked like the devil to create theme costumes each week. In fact, most people I met there didn't recognize me week to week because I always looked like a different person.

But that was a long time ago. I've dabbled in the drag and burlesque scenes, but I never fully fit in there (being as I have two X chromosomes and don't take my clothes off). I never was very good at being part of a group.

Right now, I host a Bingo night at a Mexican restaurant in the Village and work nearly full-time at a voice school. I'm learning to play the ukulele and I want to join the American Crossword Championship next March. I like to wear "ultra-femme" drag when I perform, and I ran a marathon, got married and appeared on Jeopardy! last fall.

I have missed the creativity of the Mother people, and I'm hoping to get back in the loop. You can see a picture of me performing at Heroes in 1998(?) at www.alexiasings.com/meheroes2.JPG (make sure the JPG is in caps). I'm the one with the blue hair.

I guess that's it... not the purplest of prose, just the briefest of summaries of me.

Alexia

PS: I am heartbroken to hear about Dean Johnson. Whenever I saw the Velvet Mafia, I always stood right up front and danced my ass off. I wrote this about them some time ago:

The Velvet Mafia probably couldn't be more different from MSI. The lead singer, Dean Johnson, is a New York legend, formerly of Dean and the Weenies. He's tall, he's bald, and he wears a dress. And, to paraphrase one of his songs, he is a fierce, ruling diva.

Seldom known to leave New York City for what they call "America", the band is made up of Dean, Bruno Bettleheimer on electric guitar, Little Mary Feaster playing a mean bass, Amy Van Dykey on drums, Father Joshua on sax, and occasionally the Mormon Tabernacle Horns. They used to have a cello played by Satan, but I haven't seen him in a while. Dean shares vocals with Trixie, the Times Square Hooker, now that Nurse Wanda Hill has gone and become a missionary or somesuch.

Sound fun? It is. And their songs, from "Deli Boy", to "(Money Can't Buy You Love But It Can) Buy You Me", to "She Came From Planet Muff", are clever, dancy and a riot. If you go to see this fabulous band, bring dollar bills. I'm serious, they'll want them. Oh, and check out Dean's project Homocorps, which is, like, the only place they ever play anymore!
