New users of The Motherboards often report being overwhelmed when they first visit. Hundreds of conversations are going on simultaneously, posted by familiar and unfamiliar personalities. The wit and forcefulness can be intimidating - so can the hundreds of logged posts below a user's name.

Our community contains great writers and horrid spellers, neighborhood gossips and catfighters, naive teenagers and ancient pundits all mixed up together. They may be college professors, drag queens, club stars, artists, politicos, working journalists scooping stories, straight crossdressers, clubowners, multimedia artists, nomadic party people.

How do you make your mark here in the right way, and allow the people you came to The Boards to find the chance to find you? Right here, built into our software are the tools to do so.

This topic contains information for new users that should help you through the confusion towards the best Motherboards Experience possible. Use it and you'll be glad you did!

Your first impression here is made by two things, your early posts and your user profile. If you have never experienced a BBS or message board, I would urge you to "lurk" here for a few visits, reading in forums and topics that interest you, before making your first post. Those comfortable with boards can be posting within minutes.

Before you DO post, whether it is on your first visit or your 25th, be sure to fill in some information on your user profile.

You can edit your profile at any time from the MyMotherboards link at the top right of every page. When you open the link you'll see a "Profile" link at the far right. Click this link to open your "Edit Profile" page. Here are some things you can do to tell the community something about yourself, and if you'd like, how to reach you.

Try some of these enhancements, and we guarantee a richer experience here:

1) Display Name - When registering you chose a User Name (the one you use to log in.) Your Display Name is the one that represents you next to your posts, and you can change your Display Name at any time from this page.

2) Personal Stuff - We've configured the boards to let you add as much personal information as you feel comfortable with. If you are only filling in one box we suggest City/State/Country as that may help you find like-minded souls in your area, or to meet up with Mboarders while they are travelling, or vice versa.

3) Display Email

Your registration email is never published, sold or given away. We are rigorous believers in privacy, especially online. However, you might want a published address here as well, and that's what this link is for. Many members use a free yahoo, hotmail or similar address for this purpose - including your Admin!

4) Homepage URL

Don't be shy! Provide a link to your own web page or another website that represents you here.

5) Avatar

Your avatar is that little picture that represents you. You have several options to customize this graphic representation of your online persona. Please visit

The Avatars Topic in the Help Forum

for full information about avatar customization.

5) Biography/Interests

Remember that most people will be clicking your profile because they are already interested in you because of a post you are reading, or because they are seeing your name on the "Welcome To Our Newest Member" list. A few lines of information here is very helpful in establishing your online persona. Since registered users can also search profiles under keywords, this may help someone find you for a particular show, discussion, or cause.

6) Instant Messaging Identifier

If you wish, enter your Protocol (AIM, ICQ, Jabber, etc.) and handle/identifying name. Members visiting your profile page will be able to see your online status and start a conversation with you.

Ronniferd-

Welcome to the Motherboards! It is okay to be submissive here, of course - but we do ask that you read the forum guidelines at the top of each forum you are posting in to make sure you are on topic.

You seem a bit lost, and I know the boards can be overwhelming. So, for a 30 day period we are having your posts moderated - which means you will not see them immediately, but they will be approved by a moderator before they go live - and if applicable, moved to the appropriate forum.
