Greetings, queenjosh! Not around so much for Instant Messaging these days and nights, but always good to hear from you! Whenever you blow through town, do drop in on Rapture. Did you ever flesh out Imogene? I'm very curious and would love to meet her here at the epicenter of East Village as well.
Imogene is still a work in progress darling, and as much as i would love to light off for NY, i still have much left here to do, due to my generosity and in part to impulsive shopping, i am running very low on funds, i will have to work a full timer for another year or so and i need to get an education--so very much to do---OH! i just had an idea--is it possible that whenever i do manage to get there--i will need a place to work--are there any open spaces for moi?
God! if you guys only knew how badly i want to get out of johnston county! i would cheerfully commit murder to be in a place like NY--all the leaves are brown..and the sky is grey..ive been for a waaaaalk on a winters day...id be safe and warm...if i was in....the east village
try being in Shreveport Louisiana in 1971 looking for any way out of town to the big apple in the sky. we all did, you will in your own time and you own way.
You know what I would like to instigate at Rapture a night of parlour games! I have this sick interest in buying ang playing that Trivia Pursuits 80s' edition or smth... Back in the days me an my pals used to have these daft board games nights that were just SUCH a hoot... How about we do a parlour games night at Rapture!
joe or hatches--can either of you darlings tell me if you are hiring at the rapture cafe? the diamond studded wheels of my mind are turning....oh and anna darling, the parlour games night is a very cute idea!
Doll, a word to the wise: Gone are the days when one could come to NYC on a wing and a prayer with empty pockets, even with the promise of a job (which unfortunately we cannot promise, as we are over-staffed at the moment.)
NYC has changed, and you can read all about those changes in:
Besides, winter is not the time to be traveling north, even in these days of global warming.
So, save your dubloons and don't shop compulsively. Come for a visit when you have some money and see if you like it. There is always the possiblity you might not. If you were meant to be here, you will return.
unfortunately hatches i believe you are right--and do you know why those days are gone? it is because commercialism is running rampant these days. every aspect of gay culture has been commercialized. the middle class is slowly dissapearing and the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting farther and farther behind. i mean, you have to be very wealthy to enjoy any sort of gay celebration such as cruises or circuit parties and these are things which are important parts of our culture--now only for a certain wealthy percentage of us. i am not as articulate as some of you girls but i think you get what im trying to say and it just breaks my heart. i grew up reading about the gay lib movements in the 60's and 70s and books like "dancer from the dance" by andrew holleran and "the crises of desire;aids and the fate of gay brotherhood" by robin hardy and it seems like the gay community has somewhat lost itself . perhaps i am wrong and whoever disagrees with me please do it gently
Josh..You are right. It is so multi layered though and not easily explained. As a survivor of the 60's and 70's I am always disappointed in the current state of gay life. Time for a big change. I'd like to see a return to the ideals of those earlier times when the idea gay brother and sister meant something. The Me First attitude born in the 80's has left us all severely wanting for real friendship and compassion.
NYC has changed a lot and it's very expensive as well as every other thing in America these days, everything is so commercial these days, thing like theatre tickets to the clothes on your back to going clubbing to movies as the movie theatre, and even books CDs and DVDs, and queer people do and have and want and need all these thing. And much as I really need to (or feel I need to live in NYC or any city, I'd have to wait a couple off years to save some money up, and that isn't easy, especially when there are hardly any jobs to begin with, and if you're like me you want everything you want NOW, it's very hard to get a decent job that you actually want to work at. I can't count how many times I've applyed for a job or gave employers my resume and all for nothing, not even a bloody buggery phone call. And josh you are correct in your analysis. It seems today everyone rich is having a good time and living the good lifeand us poor bastards ar straving to death, poor, lonely, having no realtionship at times or a roof over your head. And as the song goes, if you wanna be rich you gotta be a bitch, I mean look at Paris Hilton, famous for being famous and a trust fund brat to boot. Paris is the epitome of what Booby so rightly put it the Me First attitude in the late 70s and the entire decade of the 80s and guess what? the hippie idealism of the 60s and even the 90s are over for now, especially in the age of the era of Bush and post 9/11 tension and traumarama. Bobby I too want a return to those good old days that I unfortunately have not lived through and survived through that era (I bet you have so stories to tell huh?). We gotta have hope and hold on and all that psycho babble, however cliched it seems I know one day it'll happen again.
Sorry Doll but my bok is out of print though it can sometimes be found on ebay or amazon.comUK also lots of libraries seem to have it on their shelf. Good luck finding it.
