VERY excited about the upcoming new release of our software, which should be installed in the next few weeks. Though the change won't be as noticeable to you as the last big upgrade was, it contains some great new features that will definitely be a plus. Most will be available to all users and a few - because of bandwith and administrative issues, will only be available to paid members.

Available to all-

1) an Online Now feature to display who is visiting the community - Lurkers beware!

2) a Wordlet Tool to allow rapid translation or modification of any word on the site

3) New user preference for local time zone and preferred display format, so you can
watch the boards in your own local rather than Eastern Standard time.

4) Lots of improvements to the MyPop area and added preferences to the posting page.

Available to Paid Members only -

1) Private Topics (!) to allow for secure, private discussions between users. This could be totally mega. Explained simply, if say Darla wanted to start a private topic with Blonde Buddy John and Nancy Isla about an upcoming party she'd like them to promote, as long as all three of them were paid members, they could set up and post in their own private topic on the subject without having anyone else invited or involved. Can't wait for the test drive on this one!

2) Added Selectable Avatars to user profiles. This means the jazzy little picture under your name beside every post that you've probably seen on other boards - could be a picture of you, a rose, a cartoon, whatever..

There are more features but I thought these were the most exciting. As we know from the last upgrade, these changes could be a while in coming and tweaking, but will certainly be here this Spring.

FINALLY we are getting the new version of our software this week, with the above-mentioned bells and whistles, and more! Some of these features will just appear on upgrade, like "Who's Online Now" (Lurkers Beware!) and some will need further explanation and in some cases (Private Topics) Board membership to use.

This really will enhance the experience here alot and we are very excited.

but will save us all time and the boards repetitive pageviews. Please note the new feature that shows page numbers on topics that are over a page long. This is great when you just want to read the latest posts, or skip to a spot you remember, especially on those busy/and or lng-running topics.

We were upgraded last night to the latest version of our software. Though this isn't a major change, there are a few cool new features that I wanted to point out -

1) "Last reply by" on topic list pages - this is great as it shows you the last person to post in every topic - so you can eagerly open it or run from it as the case may be

Note that this won't appear if the topic hasn't had replies yet as it is obvious that the topic starter was also the last (and only) poster.

2) Profiles in pop-up box - press on a poster's name and you'll get a cute little pop-up box that lets you email them (if they've provided an addy, invite them to a private topic - if you have that privilege, etc.)

if you want to view the rest of their profile info, just hit the "more information" link. This way you can check anyone out without leaving the page you were on, and email someone quickly without necessarily reading all their info.

3) "Sticky" topics - this allows the admins to paste a topic permanently at the top of a forum - for instance, the perennial "how to post your event" topic can live up at the top of the NYC Events Forum. Haven't tried it out yet but other Board Admins are raving about it over on the Infopop boards.
