Early October 2007 At Rapture Café & Books
We are saddened to open with the news that Downtown Rock & Literary legend Dean Johnson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly recently while on a visit to Washington D.C. The details are still murky, but we at Rapture Café will sorely miss our friend and frequent partner-in-crime.
In the early 1980's I had the privilege of instituting a fledgling weekly Tuesday Night music series at the brand new Pyramid Club on Avenue A. The series was called Black Tuesday: New Music Without Apology, and Dean Johnson's first musical endeavor, Dean & the Weenies, was the foremost of a tiny handful of new bands that provided the impetus for my concept-- at the time, bands which strayed from the musical norm were all but ignored by the music industry, even the so-called Indies. And being out, and gay and in-your-face, as well shaking up the the traditional instrumental lineup were what Dean & the Weenies were all about. Dean's incredible stage presence, his appearance-- 6'5", bald and wearing a short black dress, large earrings and wrap around sunglasses-- his vocal style: spoken rap-rhymes set to a punky, frenetic instrumentation, and his sardonic, incisive and downright clever lyrics, turned each of their performances into a revolutionary cultural statement. And the fact that his band was made up of the most amazingly diverse grouping-- people of all sexual persuasions, genders and musical influences-- made them literally spokesmodels for our little family of in-house misfits at The Pyramid.
As the years went by, Dean, rather than live off his laurels, consistently re-invented himself: Rock 'n Roll Fag Bar (proving early on that queers didn't solely worship disco music,) HomoCorps, The Velvet Mafia, Night Of A Thousand Stevies impetus, XXX party promoter, sex worker, and blogger extraordinaire. An amazing legacy from an amazing friend. May he rest in peace!

Wednesday October 3rd, 8PM Dean Johnson's Reading For Filth Free Admission
Despite the untimely passing of Rock 'n Roll Fag Legend, Dean Johnson, Reading For Filth will go on as scheduled this Wednesday at Rapture Cafe:
New York City and the world beyond has sadly lost a true friend this week. Fierce ruling diva Dean Johnson reigned supreme in a Barnum-esque fashion over downtown New York's three-ring circus of freaks for 25 years. He will be truly missed.
Dean's body of work, his triumphs and his tragedies are legendary and well documented. In the past year Dean began producing volumes of written work via his blog on Myspace.com, yet another arena that witnessed Dean's fearlessness, his "fuck you's" and the honesty and articulate way in which he expressed his unique place in this world. His blog fast became as big in cyberspace as he and his parties and shows were in natural space.
Inspired by his own output, Dean curated READING FOR FILTH: QUEER WRITERS READ QUEER SEX STORIES back in June. Taking the stage in yet another way, Dean read from his blogs and made way for folks like John Cameron Mitchell, Taylor Meade, Joey Arias, Amanda Lepore and scores of other luminaries to share their own stories. October was to see the second installment of READING FOR FILTH each Wednesday. Despite the tragic loss of our host, we have decided that even now and true to form, Dean wants the show to go on.
This Wednesday will serve as a celebration of Dean's life, as per his family's wishes. We will continue this and each Wednesday to go on with the reading series as scheduled. Please feel free to bring photos, music, writings or any other Dean Johnson-related memorabilia for the Honoring Wall which has already sprung up around our stage.

Sunday October 7th, 10PM OctoberFist!
In the early 1990's Daniel Nardicio, the brains behind D-List Radio, and the "Willy Wonka of Gay Nightlife," combed every village in the German hinterlands from the Black Forest to the Bavarian Alps in order to present to US audiences the only authentic Teutonic harvest festival in North America. Rolling out the barrels, brewing up the hops, and donning unwieldy colorful folk costumes was never so much fun before! With a distinctly gay slant, Nardicio named this brand of lunatic festivity Octoberfist, and a Downtown nightlife legend was born! Expect lots of beer, buxom pigtailed mädchen in dirndles, graceless group dances and drunken chorales, stern men in tight liederhosen, and incredible shows inspired by the finest spectacles in the Tiergarten.
