Culture doesn't always translate and I think that appliance was really a Japanese dentist's spit-bowl. And not to worry about Bonnie's hygeine needs, she gets all spic and span at the K-mart home appliance counter where they regularly apply the floor demo hoover to her.
As to how this figures in to Rapture: how about having Bonnie give weekly Lady Tips in an ongoing workshop for working gals. She knows more tricks of the trade, ahem, than any old school veteran of the old bus terminal on 10th avenue.

Book Release Event...
NYC Radical Faeries: Contemporary Portraits by Luc Edouard Georges
Free Admission

In the current cultural context of conservative backlash, digital artist LUC GEORGES is delighted to present a coffee table/art book featuring 65 full color portraits of NYC RADICAL FAERIES accompanied by informative passages about this gay tribe.

Still quite unknown and mysterious even to the gay community at large, Faeries are part of a flamboyant anti-assimilationist fringe of gay activism, liberation and consciousness. This colorful and fun-filled book is a visual guide to their philosophy and way of life. It is a historical recording of a particularly vibrant and creative collective in underground New York City in the early Millennium.

Radical Faeries mediate between the masculine and the feminine and between the spiritual and the mundane. They buy land and turn it into Nature Sanctuaries where they gather, plan actions, explore and develop “Queer Consciousness.” In cities, they are a network that marches against injustice and creates cultural events and interventions.

With their circular manner of community building, which is inspired by Native Indian culture, inclusion, reverence for the sanctity of nature, and anti consumerism, this leaderless tribe creates a community that encourages diversity and nurtures independent and avant-garde artists. Radical Faeries are immeasurably cherished for their wisdom and sometimes even mystical message.

Performances by Agnes DeGarron, Tyra Colbaire, Donald Gallagher, films by Lake Ivan Exists and Dogwoodi.

Tonight the collective, curated by teaching artists Lisa Ascalon and Ellen Hagan, presents part one of their slam-poetry semi-finals and features performers of college age and up.

As a collective, girlstory has performed at the Gramercy Arts Club, The Theater at Madison Square Garden and the Culture Project. Added to the mix this month: Open Christiania Vodka bar from 7 - 8pm. Sloshy and sleazy.

Nobody loves a good dirty story more than Rapture. The late, great Dean Johnson, who added "writer" to his list of talents when his sex-saturated blog exploded in popularity, began a curatorial stint at Rapture presenting an entire series of standing-room-only literary salons. These weekly events continue through December, featuring NYC's most luminous personalities telling tales and reading the room. Stop in for a cocktail and hear some good raunchy dirt being spilled by these speakers (Wednesday, Dec. 5):

Robbynne Kaamil, Eric Leven, JoeMyGod, Our Lady J and Hattie Hathaway

And Post-Filth:

Join Chloe Dzubilo, Alice O'Malley and Mr. Joe for their somewhat annual Sagittarian Soiree! All manner of Sags and those who love them are invited to play with these three Whorses from 10pm until ?

Once upon a time at a little nightclub called MOTHER in the bowels of the Meatpacking District was a little-known party called MESSY. A tribute to the worst drinkers and nightlife nightmares, Messy, even in it's short life, made it's mark on those who stumbled across it. Every week, Hattie Hathaway and Paul Alexander collapsed on the onstage sofa slurring into the mic about lost keys to a brown porsche and some orange beaded disco bag containing "medicine" while DJ Sammy Jo played 60's soul, disco, and horrible ballads. Special guest stars would pop by to perform and in true Messy form wigs would be lost, costumes ruined, and food thrown.

Well, as luck would have it Hattie, Paul and Sammy Jo are bringing it all back for...

Rapture Café & Books Celebrates One Year & More!

Celebrations Abound! We’re One!

On the eve of this year’s Winter Solstice, December 20, please join us at Rapture for one very long night – it’s our One Year Anniversary! This season is so full of parties, shows, sales, sprees and splendor – what better reason to revel than Rapture's very first birthday?

We also have to say we love the way these folks ring in the winter...

Burning the Clocks is a winter solstice festival that takes place each year in Brighton, UK. Founded in 1993, the celebration centers round a procession of lanterns and costumes, made from withies (willow canes) and white tissue paper, lead by local bands with a carnival atmosphere. The procession makes its way through Brighton city centre to the seafront where the festivities culminate in a lantern bonfire, accompanied by fireworks. The costumes all include a clockface to represent the passing of time, although each year has a slight change of theme.

Same Sky, the arts initiative that first organized the festival, explains: "Burning the Clocks is an antidote to the excesses of the commercial Christmas. People gather together to make paper and willow lanterns to carry through their city and burn on the beach as a token for the end of the year ... The lantern makers become part of the show as they invest the lanterns with their wishes, hopes, and fears and then pass them into the fire. Same Sky are masters at creating new urban rituals to replace those traditional festivals that were lost in the dash to be new and non superstitious."

http://www.burningtheclocks.co.uk/

Not quite burning, but pretty darn hot, are our delicious edibles this season. We're offering healthful and delicious Spinach Pie, and Vegetable Burritos, as well as our very own hearty vegetarian soups daily including rich Hungarian Tomato Garlic Bisque fit for a Hapsburg, perky Curried Squash with Apple, and exotic Egyptian Red Lentil... bet you never imagined eating your vegetables could be so good!

We've also opened our special holiday gift section with items crafted by our friends-- music and other things by Adam Joseph, the Dazzle Dancers, Reuben Butchart, as well as handmade books and artwork by Suzanne Coley, enabling you to shop local for your gift-giving needs...

With our unflagging End-Of-Year Spirit we offer a veritable cornucopia of regular special events-- literary, tuneful, comedic, holiday-themed, and otherwise... including our stellar "Reading For Filth" series, originally conceived by the late Dean Johnson, the howl-larious Monday Nite Bingo with Linda Simpson and Murray Hill, and the café-cum-gay-la lounge vibe of D-Lister Daniel Nardicio's After Dark events, as well as a plethora of special one-nighters you won't want to miss!

And now, on to our holiday calendar...

THANKS, FAERIES!

Thank you to everyone who came to our hoppin' book launch party on Tuesday night, and thank you again to Rapture for being so good to us! Because we sold out of our first printing so quickly (YAY!) and many of you were unable to get one (or two or ten), we have decided to do a second printing.

Yes, We're Doing a Second Printing of "FAERIE OFFERINGS" BY GRANITE & GARRETT (aka JACKIE BIGALOW)

If you want one, please send me an e-mail request @ gdomina@earthlink.net

Then, you can pick them up next week either at my reading at Rapture on Wednesday December 19th @ 8pm, or from Granite at Rapture's 1st Anniversary party on Thursday December 20th. Granite will also be selling his holiday cards these two nights.

All books will still be $20, and each will be signed by the author and artist.
We are also willing to mail them to you for an additional $7.50 per book.

Thank you all again for such a positive response, and please spread the good word!

Come one, come all Motherboarders! Holiday Hang tonight at Rapture as we celebrate our Year One. 8pm - just tell Glenn Marla at the door that you are from the Motherboards.

Starring Rose Wood, Hapi Phace, Chi Chi Valenti, Basil Twist, Adam Joseph, Clint Michigan, La'Mady and much, much more! Music by baby K and Sammy Jo!

Once again...many thanks to these boards in particular for all the love and support in 2007. Onward and upward.
