I heard landlord wanted Michael out so they changed locks and pulled gates on him with no warning.

I heard it wasn't Michael necessarily but club owners are in major debt to the landlord, not paying the rent, etc.

Rents are just out of control in New York.
Nothing but big corporations can survive.
I was in a cab going up Third Ave. and I noticed that the entire trip uptown was nothing but a series of giant chain stores.
The Gap, Starbucks, Duane Reade, Strawberry, The Gap, Starbucks, Duane Reade, Strawberry, The Gap, Starbucks, Duane Reade, Strawberry, etc.
It's just one big mall now.

Also shuttered in 2008: Tompkins Square Bakery and Lost Shoe (though Anne got herself a sweet exit package); point being, we're running out of gathering places that provide work and much-needed relief from that asphyxiating mall culture.

Even Barnes and Noble is bailing out of the Astor Place store because of too high rent!
