Well, The Rapture Cafe has turned out to be the biggest thing to hit the East Village since Baby Greggor opened up his gallery on Avenue A. (Literally on Avenue A).
I am still reeling from Saturday here, but here's an additional sample of what's coming up:
Film: "The Queen" starring Mother Flawless Sabrina Sunday, January 21st 8:00 PM Free Admission
"An old draq queen unloads her stash." ~Mother Flawless Sabrina
In 1968 Flawless Sabrina, World's Most Masterful Mistress of Ceremonies, a.k.a. Jack Doroshow, skyrocketed to worldwide recognition, as the star subject of the documentary, "The Queen". Shown at the Cannes Film Festival, Judith Crist called it one of the ten best films of the decade. Sabrina was later hired as a "special advisor" on such films as Myra Breckenridge, Midnight Cowboy and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Rapture Cafe & Books, in association with Le Petit Versailles, is proud to host a rare, free screening of this cult classic. As royal denizen of downtown New York's nightlife, "Mother" Flawless Sabrina can often be found on the town holding court at various nightclubs. This evening's event offers an opportunity for Sabrina's following to get a seldom-seen glimpse of her influence on the history and emergence of female impersonation in this country.
An avid collector of many of the most important emerging artists of the past half century, Jack will be also be selling works out of his private studio during the week of January 22nd through January 28th. Works by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Picasso, Miro, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Math-You, Namie, Tom Marquee, Kandinsky, and Emily Bowers. By appointment, and cash sales only, please let us know at Rapture and we'll hook you up. -----
Dance: Yves Musard's "Repercussion" Thursday January 25th, 8PM Free Admission
Attention terpsichoreans! The acclaimed French-born, site-specific choreographer, Yves Musard, who has "defined his dances in relationship to urban and natural environments" comes to Rapture tonight to present "Repercussion," a dance performance using sounds, movement and projected views. M. Musard will bring the outside in, linking the movement of nature, earth and sky with the familiar concrete, brick and steel cityscape of Alphabet City.
----------
Coming in February:
- Panther Books Presents: Ira Cohen - Goodie Magazine Presents Hank O'Neal - Another D-List Radio Live Broadcast! - Tell-Tale Art comes to Rapture! - Kenny Lockwood CD Release Party!
Tomorrow's screening looks to be MAJOR. I'm seeing postings flying all over myspace (if that's any indicator).
Jack Waters and Peter Cramer (co-directors of ABC No Rio from 1981 - 1988) from Le Petit Versaille will introduce the evening and talk a little about the work they do in the garden and beyond under the auspices of Allied Productions, Inc. Mother Flawless Sabrina will introduce THE QUEEN and give some insight into the history of female impersonation. School is in, honey!
For those of you attending, please know we are NOT serving from the cafe tomorrow; we highly encourage you to bring your own bevs and such whilst we upgrade our food and drink service area to meet the city's permit requirements.
Longtime literary icon Ira Cohen comes East to celebrate his birthday with us tonight. Back in the 1960s, in Tangiers, Ira published the legendary magazine GNAOUA which exposed us to the work of William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Jack Smith, and Irving Rosenthal, among others, and wrote "The Hashish Cookbook" under the pseudonym Panama Rose. In the 1970's, he published many lierary experimentalists, including Charles Henri Ford, Gregory Corso and Angus Maclise. Ira Cohen's 1968 film "Invasion Of Thunderbolt Pagoda," which has been called "a surrealistic masterpiece," was released on DVD in 2006. Ira is also a photographer who has explored the entire spectrum of photography from infrared to black light; Jimi Hendrix said that looking at his mylar images was like "looking through butterfly's wings." And throughout the decades, Ira Cohen has continued to produce astounding written work of his own. His most recent book, "Poems From the Akashic Record" was published by Panther Books in 2001 and will be featured this evening.
"Lee Wiley, Djuna Barnes, Berenice Abbott, Eddie Condon: the list of Hank O'Neal's pals is a who's who of the most thrilling characters in the great Drama of New York. He's a renaissance man of pictures, songs and some rather awkward modern dancing. And it's all thanks to the CIA."
--From the Goodie website
Tonight's the much-anticipated kick-off party for Goodie magazine's most recent issue featuring the incredible Hank O'Neal who, through the years, has photographed just about all of our musical and literary influences and has also produced some very fine records in his Broadway studio. Let me put it this way... it was at Hank's studio that I met William Burroughs and Wendy Carlos on the same evening!
Damn!!! I've been in RAPTURE 3 times this week and every time I've been in there the place is brimming with cutie pies! What's up with that. What's the attraction? I guess Hattie Hathaway hasn't lost her touch. It's either that or the wifi. I think Mr. Joe should change the name to "The Candy Shoppe".
Before bedtime story my tyke says "you know i can't wait to show Joe and Brian our new laptop". I am thinking "who are joe and Brian? I.e. Which kid from his school?" and so I ask.. and he said "my friends! My friends at Rapture". OH!
Damm u guys are hookin em in young! And are so obviously in the thoughts of the kids in the hood!
I was in Barnes & Nobles last week buying Baby Boots a birthday present. (I'm sorry to say that I just found out that RAPTURE has a children's section). There was a table displaying about 50 different books about poop, pee, farts... you name it! It's a whole big thing in the kiddie world. I wish we had books like that when I was a kid. That would have given us HOURS & HOURS of laughter.
Messy, when you were a kid I'm surprised they had poop! I told you I don't wanna see you around here again after what you left in the gutter out in front Rapture. We are responsible for the cleanliness of not only the sidewalk in front of the store, but also the first 12 inches going into the street, you animal!
I wanna come by and git me some readin', Do you have that new Kate Bornstein book? She's a lezzie and a tranny, you do specialize in the work of such perverts, yes?
