Ohmygoddess!!! I love that Album! It's been years since I've heard it. I used to have a copy way back in early 1972. Other cuts I love are "Straight Brother," "Salty Candy," and "Tryin' to stay alive." If I think hard enough I'll probably remember some more titles. But that one you mention" Down on the Base" is a good one too, and yes it has once again become regretably relevant, thanks to our memoryless Executive Government.
It's funny, because the other day I was listening to the Stones "Let It Bleed" album and a particular cut "Live with me" features Leon Russel on the piano, and I was marveling for the first time in years as to how fine he rocked them keys. A mighty tight jam between him, the stones, and Bobby Keyes on Sax.

I always have a strange mix. I have Dolly's double CD Live and Well, the Essential Nina Simone, The 3 Degrees Greatest Hits, and Tammy Wynette's 20th Anniversary CD. It's all gorgeous, but Nina is turning me OUT at the moment.

HA Ha... Bobby we must be on the same wavelength I was BLASTIN "my Jamaican guy" the other wk .. to my jamaican guy... late one night loud from the SUV car stereo as we sat on the hood at the top of the Mountain in the dark looking at Kingston town all twinkly lights below.. it really hit the spot to I then was playing a whole Grace Jones medley!! LOL That album still is classic... I say we also have a Divine revival "jungle Jezebel, jungle jezebel!"

I have Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang" on continual loop. Her recent turn at Crobar made me curious; I've been discovering all of her brilliant old duets with Lee Hazelwood. But "Bang Bang"--the dark dark cover of Sonny & Cher's hit--has got me newly hooked.
Everything she's done with Morrissey is stellar. Funny, listening to the Hazelwood duets made me realize: they obviously were the blueprint for Morrissey's ill-advised duet with Siouxsie called "Interlude." Oy. Gobs, I don't have "coming down from dover" -- thanks for the tip! I'll get it tonight.
Don't ask me why, but suddenly I have been listening to a lot of Nina Simone including her version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" as well as "Ne Me Quitte Pas". Must be winter getting to me.

I've uncovered the Damned's 'Anti-Pope', and the Mekon's 'Tuneless Trumpet.' I get transported to the two hour encores for live gigs these two bands would do. Encores longer than the main set.
Somehow, unadorned, authentic, underproduced rock seems an antidote to the officially promoted mass delusion we are all being required to inhabit now.

I just bought Tina Turners's recently released cd "All the best". Can I just say that her voice is absolutely magnificent and full of soul and grit. It's a two cd set, and I've been burning them out with the replay button- I just can't get enough.
Anna, the last time I saw Gang of Four live was in Chicago around 1981. They played in a west side bingo hall with just a curtain drapped over the bingo tally board. The crowd wouldn't let the band leave. They played their entire discography, at least seven songs for the three encores alone. Whack, before anyone used the word.
