Gwen.

Worshipping this. I was just regaling S'tan with the story of my unexpected trip to the Gwen Stefani concert at Jones Beach a couple of weeks ago. My friend found tix on craigslist at the last minute, so off to Penn Station we went to catch the LIRR for points east. Had never been to Jones Beach before. Gorgeous venue. Gwen was abs stunning in strict white shirt and neck tie. Half way through the show, she took off into the stands, headed straight up to the back of the stadium...no where near where we were, but I was already thinking of the story I'd tell, about how "Gwen came out into the audience and sang really near us." Well...she went so far up into the stands that she slipped out of range for the wireless mic. So traipsing through the rows she went, down, down to the first section off the floor--our section--and stopped at OUR ROW! Just feet from us. It was incredible. She stood on a chair and sang an entire song ("Cool" from loveangelmusicbaby -- my favorite from the album.) She was radiant and it was magikal. Anyhoo, I was just telling S'tan of this and she dropped a line:

quote:
In the olde days Chi knew of ths girl who was a perfect slave to all the House divas... her name was gwen and the name went down in history as the verb: To serve perfectly, as in "She wishes she could gwen for him," and also the nouns, "He is such a gwen!" and "His gwennage got really annoying."

WORSHIP! I related this to my David, who recalled a Details piece from years ago by dj Anita Sarko, who wrote of going to Mario Badescu (our favorite skin care emporium) and being doted on by all the "gwens" there. I just love it. Empress and Daddy, I'd love to hear more about the illustrious GWEN.

Hie Gorgey!
Isn't that funny David remembered the gwen term...
and me too, I'd like to know the story behind who the real Gwen was.
I know Chi must have told me, but it seems lost in one of the many deep basement rooms of my many Jackie evenings...

PS: Gwen Stefani is no gwen.

You both are such WITCHES

I had pulled the seldom-read piece of mine called "The Language" to read tonight at Rapture. It will probably OPEN the show!

So, I'll post the whole piece later, but here i the Gwen bit..

quote:
"Gwen", unlike brown, is a very specific term, meaning one who holds your handbag while you go onstage, or otherwise serves. A gwen is one step up from a handmaiden, and two steps up from a ham sandwich. Usage: "She's a good gwen", or, "Michael used to be Steven's ham sandwich."

The cult of gwen began fifteen years ago with a real person, one of the girl rappers in a trio called The Sequence. Their leader was a big church-voiced diva named Angie B. She ran the show. She wrote the songs, made the bookings, and made sure everybody "got a little financial something" after. The pretty, light-skinned one rapped as Blondie, but her real name was Gwen, and Angie was not about to let her forget it. "Gwen, Angie would say, shifting her formidable weight in a chair, "I hate to bother you, but would you mind running down to the store for a pack of Kool Ultras and some Tropical Treat?"

So rehearsal would stop, and Gwen would scurry in her four-inch heels down all those flights of stairs and across the street to get the stuff. No sooner would she return to the studio than Angie would think of another request. "Gwen, you know I hate to bother you, but could you go down and get me a bottle of Olde English and a bag of Cheetos deep-fried?" When Angie gave birth to her daughter Diamond Tiara Stone, we suspected that it was Gwen who had actually gone through labor. Now, Angie certainly considered Gwen a best friend, and Gwenny never questioned her role. Because she was a good Gwen.
